Santo Antônio do ItambéPico do Itambé is a park created by the State of Minas Gerais in 1998, protected park (APA - Área de Proteção Ambiental) located at the north of the state capital of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte (about 300 km), and is part of the Cordillera do Espinhaço (in the northern part of the state).
The Pico do Itambé accumulates at an altitude of 2070 meters.
The municipalities of Santo Antônio do Itambé, Serra Azul and the town of Serro delimit the park.

Lichens have a very particular character: they are double, even sometimes triple beings since they are formed from the very close association (or symbiosis) between a fungus and a microscopic partner capable of carrying out photosynthesis, i.e. a green algae, or a cyanobacterium (or sometimes both together!).
The study of lichens is no longer a matter of botany but of mycology and it is not just a question of words: to really understand and study lichens, you have to know fungi deeply.
