Lapinha, Lagoa SantaSerra do Cipó is a protected national park (APA - Área de Proteção Ambiental Morro da Pedreira) located at the north of the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte and is part of the Cordilheira do Espinhaço (in its southern part).
Since few years, this part of the Serra do Cipó, at the foot of the village of Lapinha is open to tourism and is accessed by a dirt track. This region of the Serra do Cipó has two peaks, the Pico da Lapinha which lies at an altitude of 1686 meters and its neighbor, the Pico do Breu barely above.

Lichens have a very particular character: they are double, even sometimes triple beings since they are formed from the very close association (or symbiosis) between a fungus and a microscopic partner capable of carrying out photosynthesis, i.e. a green algae, or a cyanobacterium (or sometimes both together!).
The study of lichens is no longer a matter of botany but of mycology and it is not just a question of words: to really understand and study lichens, you have to know fungi deeply.
